How to Build a Vision Board

A vision board helps organize your dreams into actions through inspiring words and photos. They help you visualize your goals, track your progress, and stay motivated throughout the year. Making a vision board is a fun creative outlet that can bring clarity and help you stay accountable to your goals.

Vision Board Prep

Before you assemble your vision board, take some time to plan out a theme. This could be your One Little Word you’re focusing on for the year, a symbol, color scheme, things that bring you joy, etc.

  1. Find Inspiration.

Whether you find inspiration from friends, family, role models, or books, turn to your sources of hope that guide your life. Put down your dreams—and remember, nothing is impossible on your vision board. You may want to jot down a list or draw a rough sketch of what you want to include on your board.

2. Create your goals.

Think through the different aspects of your life and holistically look at what you want to achieve in different areas of your life. As a starting point, think through the following categories:

  • Financial Goals

  • Relationship/Family Goals

  • Happiness Goals

  • Professional Goals

  • Spiritual Goals

  • Health Goals

Your vision board is a piece of art, you don’t have to write down every goal, but representing these goals in some way on your vision board can be useful. For example, you could have a picture of a piggy bank, rather than writing out “Save Money.”

3. Choose your photos.

Your Persnickety Box is a perfect starting point for your vision board because square prints are easy to layer and will always make a beautiful grid. Plus, it’s easy to get a consistent look when all your photos are the same size! You can easily add photos that inspire you in the Persnickety Box app and get your photos shipped straight to your house. Or, you can find photos from your previous photo boxes and create a vision board from old memories!

Creating the Board

Once you have your tape, scissors, and Persnickety Box photos handy, you can get started on creating your vision board! You can also use stickers, dried flowers, paper momentos, your child’s artwork, craft paper scraps, and shapes cut out of magazines to add color and texture to your vision board.

Depending on your space, you may want to create a vision board in a few different ways. We love the look of the grid for vision boards that will also function as home decor. For offices and creative spaces, we love collage boards! Whatever your style is, decide where your vision board will live and then decide how it will be arranged based on that. If you think you will want to move your vision board throughout the year, we suggest creating it on poster paper or in a glass picture frame.

Here’s how we made ours:

The Grid Style

For a grid vision board, lay your photos out flat, and then create a tape grid with painter’s tape. This helps you see how your vision board will actually be, and helps you to put the photos up in a straight line! Each print is 4x4 and the painter’s tape was 1 inch wide, so measuring your tape should be a breeze. In the picture above, our tape lines were 34x24 inches. To stick the photos to the wall, we used simple painter’s tape and created loops with the tape to keep the photos up.

The Collage Style

If you’re looking for a more creative look, you can cut and overlap your photos to make a collage! We like to put our theme at the center of the board and then work outwards. So if your theme is a word, consider putting that word boldly in the center! For the scrapbook lovers out there, you’ll love the collage look.
